PHILADELPHIA – Intellectual Property boutique Condo Roccia Koptiw LLP has expanded beyond its core patent prosecution practice to bolster its patent litigation practice. The firm announced that noted patent litigator Michael J. Bonella has joined the firm as a partner. Bonella previously co-chaired the patent litigation practice of Kessler Topaz Meltzer & Check, LLP.
Bonella has argued before the Federal Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit (Federal Circuit), and litigated multimillion-dollar patent cases, including managing a case that settled for a value of 45 million dollars. Bonella’s practice focuses on complex patent litigation in diverse technology areas including pharmaceutical, medical device, consumer products, and telecommunications.
Patent prosecution and patent litigation practices have significant overlap in theory, but success depends on the team. “Mike is someone we’ve known and respected for a long time,” said Vince Roccia, one of Condo Roccia Koptiw’s founding partners. “We are invested in growing the right way, with the right people. Mike is one of the few first-chair litigators who fits our firm culture and shares our core values.”
“Condo Roccia Koptiw’s tremendous growth,” Bonella said, “is directly attributable to their model of streamlined infrastructure, cutting edge technology usage, and retention of top-tier attorneys and staff. They have an amazingly deep bench, with electrical, mechanical, and chemical expertise all in one place.” Bonella noted that it greatly increases the effectiveness of a patent litigation practice to be surrounded by fellow patent attorneys.
Bonella sees Condo Roccia Koptiw as a great fit for clients who appreciate that litigation is an investment, but are too discerning to pay inflated rates based on outmoded operating models. Clients will get large Philadelphia IP boutique experience without high billing rates due to the firm’s unique business model. “The concept of hiring high quality people and paying them well may not sound like a recipe for lower billing rates to clients,” said Bonella, “but based on AIPLA polls, Condo Roccia Koptiw’s billing rates are surprisingly affordable.”
Bonella is admitted to practice in Pennsylvania, and before the United States Patent and Trademark Office, United States Supreme Court, and the Federal Circuit. He earned his undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering from Villanova University, his law degree from Duke University School of Law, and his LLM degree in trial advocacy from Temple University. Prior to his legal career, Bonella served in the U.S. Navy, with training in nuclear engineering and electrical engineering.
